There's a machine in the back of the shop that's older than the shop itself. Our father bought it second-hand in 1987, the year he opened the doors on Yonge Street, and it's been cutting keys ever since. It's a heavy cast-iron thing with a brass tracer arm and a wheel you pull down by hand. It's finicky, it's loud, and it has outlived three of its modern replacements.
People ask why we don't get a new one. The honest answer is that the old machine cuts a better key. The tracer follows the original key's profile exactly — every notch, every valley — and the cutter is sharp enough that the new key comes out clean, no burrs, no wobble. A modern machine does the same job faster, but it's not more accurate. It's just quieter about it.
How a key is cut
It looks simple, and in a way it is. You clamp the original key on one side of the machine and a blank on the other. You run the tracer along the original, and the cutter mirrors it into the blank. The skill is in the feel — knowing how much pressure, how fast to pull, when the profile is deep enough that the key will turn smoothly without being so deep it snaps in the lock.
That feel is why we still cut keys by hand rather than feeding a code into a machine. A code-cut key is fine for most locks. But for an old door, or a lock that's worn, or a key that's been filed down over the years, nothing beats tracing the original by hand. It's the difference between a key that works and a key that works every time, first try.
Why we keep it
Every trade has a tool that's worth more than it cost, because it's been doing the job so long it's become part of how the work gets done. This machine is ours. When it finally gives out — and it will, someday — we'll find another one just like it. There's no point fixing what isn't broken.
